In Defence of Soft Cell
Each time I see/hear Jools Holland later he annoys me more and more. I watched the extended Saturday night 'Later...' last night so I could catch the extra Soft Cell song and the interview they did. After Soft Cell played, Idles were next on and immediately after their song had finished Jools smugly said, "And THEY don't use synthesizers, as THEY are punks." Straight after Soft Cell's opening song? I mean, why? What was the point in that remark, so obviously aimed at Marc Almond and Dave Ball? I really enjoyed l Idles as well, as they were a breath of fresh air on the show and I've heard great things about them. But I still wish Marc or Dave had said when talking to Jools a bit later, "well, Idles might be punks that won't allow synthesizers but we're a torch-pop band and we wouldn't allow anyone in our band who can't sing." I just don't get the need for Jools Hollands' snide remark. Not only was it sneaky but being prejudiced against bands that use synths? I thought that had finally disappeared with the dinosaurs. It seems that from the very first moment I discovered them back in 1982 to this very day, Soft Cell are still underdogs who are considered to be fair game for insults as they obviously threaten many people. I actually think it's a confirmation that they got things very, very right.
